Journeys

Rome and the Amalfi Coast in 6 days

Two days in Rome, a morning in Pompeii, then three on the coast.

Overview

The Amalfi Coast looks easy in photographs and is hard to do well. The road is narrow, the buses are crowded in summer and the ferries run only part of the year. We route this journey around those facts, so you arrive by boat where you can and by road where you must, and never sit in a traffic jam at the cliff's edge.

We start in Rome because the contrast is the point: two days in the city that built an empire, a morning in the one that an eruption froze, and then three days on a coast where nothing has been built for the sake of anyone but the people who live there.

  • Rome's Forum, Palatine and Colosseum with an archaeologist, and a Baroque afternoon
  • Pompeii with a guide, and Vesuvius on the horizon the whole way
  • A ferry ride along the coast from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi
  • A day on the Path of the Gods, with an easier walking alternative
  • Two nights in a small hotel above the sea

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Rome: arrive, then sunset on the Gianicolo

Check in near the centre, then walk up to the Gianicolo for golden hour and down to Trastevere for a welcome dinner.

  2. Day 2

    Rome: the ancient city

Early entry to the Forum, Palatine and Colosseum with our archaeologist guide. The afternoon is free for the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and a long lunch.

  3. Day 3

To Naples, then Pompeii and Sorrento

A morning high-speed train from Rome to Naples, about an hour and ten minutes. We go on to Pompeii, about 35 minutes by the Circumvesuviana line, for a guided visit, then continue to Sorrento for the night.

  4. Day 4

By boat to Positano and Amalfi

A morning ferry from Sorrento to Positano, with time to wander its stepped lanes, then another along the coast to Amalfi. We stay the night in a small hotel above the water.

  5. Day 5

    The Path of the Gods

A guided walk high above the sea along the old mule paths, with an easier, shorter option for those who prefer it. The afternoon is free to swim or sit.

  6. Day 6

    Departure

A morning ferry to Salerno, then a high-speed train north, or on to the airport as you need. We book it all and send a card with the timings.

Questions

Why only April to October?

The ferries between Salerno, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento run only in that season, and many seaside hotels close outside it. We would rather run it well for seven months than badly for twelve.

Is the Path of the Gods hard?

It is a mountain path with steps and drops, about three hours. We offer a shorter, flatter walk the same morning for anyone who prefers it, and guests often split between the two.

Can we add Capri?

Yes, as an extra day in the high season. Tell us when you enquire and we will quote the changes.
